New Records FIFA

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 hosted by Australia and New Zealand has already made history and set new records within just six days of kick-off.

The tournament has been a resounding success, with over 1.5 million tickets already sold, packed stadiums during the opening round, and a festive atmosphere prevailing in the host nations.

As the tournament captures the hearts and minds of both local and visiting fans, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expresses his gratitude to the two host nations for their efforts in elevating the profile of women’s football to an unprecedented global scale.

Record-Breaking Attendance

The tournament began on a high note, with more than 117,000 fans filling both Eden Park in Auckland and Stadium Australia in Sydney on the opening day, setting new records for attendance.

The 42,137 spectators at Eden Park witnessed New Zealand’s historic victory against Norway, making it the largest crowd ever for a football match, be it women’s or men’s, in the country.

Meanwhile, the 75,784 fans at Stadium Australia for the match between Australia and the Republic of Ireland marked the largest audience at a FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in the past 24 years.

With just six days of tournament action, FIFA had already surpassed its goal of selling over 1.5 million tickets for the 64 matches.

Thrilling and Competitive Matches

After the completion of the first round of matches, including the game between South Korea and Colombia, the total attendance for the first 16 matches reached an impressive 459,547, with an average of 28,721 spectators per match. This represents a remarkable 54% increase compared to the first 16 matches of the previous tournament held in France in 2019.

The FIFA fan festivals, organized for the first time in a Women’s World Cup, have also garnered immense popularity, adding to the vibrant atmosphere surrounding the event.

The tournament has maintained a competitive balance, justifying the decision to expand the final phase to 32 teams. In the first 16 matches, there were two draws, seven matches decided by a single goal, and two by a two-goal margin.

Notably, both Colombia and New Zealand defied the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking by securing victories against higher-ranked teams, South Korea and Norway, respectively.

Embracing the Future of Women’s Football

The Women’s World Cup 2023 has not only shattered attendance records but also highlighted the growing enthusiasm and support for women’s football worldwide.

The success of the tournament underscores the continuous progress made in promoting gender equality and paving the way for a brighter future for women’s sports.
